My Journey Through AS Levels: What I Wish I Knew as a Student

When I first started my AS Levels, I remember feeling both excited and overwhelmed. It was a big step up from IGCSEWith AS Level tutoring, I quickly realized that I needed to adjust my study habits to meet the demands of this advanced curriculum.

Looking back, there are so many insights I wish I had known at the time, and I want to share them with you—whether you’re just beginning your AS Levels or are already deep into the experience.

1. It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed when Starting AS level

In the beginning, I found myself worrying about the workload and how different AS Levels felt compared to GCSEs. But here’s something I wish someone had told me: it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. The key is to acknowledge it but not let it hold you back. It’s a new challenge, and like any new challenge, it takes time to adjust. Give yourself permission to learn and grow.

2. Plan the AS Study Plan

One thing I learned (and the hard way!) is that time management is crucial. Unlike earlier school years, AS Levels require you to stay on top of multiple subjects, each with its own demands. Making AS Level Study Plan helped me tremendously. It doesn’t have to be overly strict, but having a clear plan allowed me to balance my time between revising, practicing past papers, and taking breaks to avoid burnout.

3. Focus on Understanding, Not Just Memorizing

At AS Level, you can’t get by with just memorizing facts. The examiners are looking for a deeper understanding of the material. I found this out when I tried to rely on rote learning—and it didn’t work! That’s why I started focusing on truly understanding the core concepts of each subject. Whether it’s mathematics equations, economics graph, or mechanism principles, knowing why things happen makes a huge difference.

4. Ask for Help When You Need It

If you’re stuck, don’t be afraid to reach out—to your teachers, your classmates, or even a tutor. There’s no shame in seeking support, and sometimes a different perspective can make all the difference. Yeah, tutoring can be one option, as this is what I took.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Something I learned late into the year was the importance of practicing past papers. AS Level exams have a specific style, and doing past papers helped me get familiar with the way questions are asked. It also highlighted areas where I needed to improve. Set aside time each week to work through these, and you’ll see your confidence—and your grades—improve.

6. Balance Your AS Studies and Well-being

I remember a point during my AS Levels where I was studying every hour of the day and night, and I burnt out. The truth is, pushing yourself too hard can be counterproductive. You need to find a balance between studying and taking care of yourself. Sleep, healthy eating, and exercise play a huge role in keeping your mind sharp. Don’t forget to make time for hobbies and relaxation too!

7. Get the Right Support Early

Looking back, I realize how helpful it would have been to have a dedicated tutor guiding me through the more difficult topics and keeping me on track. With personalized lessons that focus on your unique needs, they are there to help you tackle those tricky areas, boost your confidence, and excel in your studies.

8. Tailored Tutoring to Meet My Needs

During my AS Levels, I realized how important it was to acknowledge my strengths while seeking help in the areas I struggled with. I took four subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Economics. While I felt confident handling Mathematics on my own, I quickly realized I needed extra support in Chemistry and Economics.

The jump from IGCSE to A Level Chemistry was tough. I found myself struggling to grasp some of the advanced concepts, and it became clear that I couldn’t get through it alone. For Economics, I needed specific help with data response questions. These questions were tricky because they required not just understanding the material but also applying critical thinking skills under time pressure.

Biology was a bit different. I felt comfortable with the core concepts, but when it came to structured paper answers, I knew I wasn’t quite where I wanted to be. So, I found a tutor with marking experience who could help me refine my answers. Their feedback gave me the edge I needed to boost my grades.

This tailored approach to tutoring made all the difference. By focusing on Chemistry and Economics tutoring, while getting occasional feedback on my Biology structured papers, I was able to close the gaps in my understanding and see a real improvement in my overall performance.
